This appendix leads you through the steps for installing FrontPage.
Table A.1 describes the minimum system requirements. If you do
not have an Internet connection, FrontPage guides you through
the process of installing enough of Windows 95 or Windows NT networking
to use FrontPage without connecting to the Internet.
| Item | Requirement |
| CPU | 486 or higher processor |
| Operating system | Windows 95 or Windows NT version 3.51 or higher |
| Hard disk space | 15MB minimum (more required for your Web pages and images) |
| Physical memory | 8MB (16MB recommended if you use the Personal Web Server) for Windows 95 16MB (24MB recommended if you use the Personal Web Server) for Windows NT |
| Other | Winsock-compliant TCP/IP stack Winsock version 1.1 or later |
FrontPage installs in 15 easy steps. The following sections describe each step. Before you run the setup program, save any data you are currently working on and close all other applications.
Insert the setup disk into your floppy drive. To run the setup program from Windows 95, choose Run from the Start menu. To run the setup program from Windows NT, choose Run from the File menu. Enter A:\SETUP (replacing the drive letter with your drive, if it's different). Choose OK or press Enter to continue.
The Welcome panel in the Setup program advises you to save the data in your opened programs and close all other applications. Choose Next to continue installation. The FrontPage Registration panel appears.
In the FrontPage Registration panel, enter your Name and Company in the spaces provided. Data must appear in both fields (you can enter none for a company name if that applies). Click Next. The Confirm FrontPage Registration dialog box appears, asking you if your registration information is correct. Choose Yes to continue or No to return to the registration panel to correct it.
Use the Destination Path panel to select the drive and the folder where the FrontPage program will install. For Windows 95, the default installation directory is C:\Program Files\Microsoft FrontPage. For Windows NT, the default directory is C:\Microsoft FrontPage.
When performing a new installation, you have these options:
When you upgrade from a previous version of FrontPage, Setup detects the previous version of FrontPage and lists it in the Destination directory field. You have the following options:
The Choose Directory panel appears when you choose to install FrontPage to a directory other than the default directory.
The Setup Type panel enables you to choose how you want to install the program. The two installation options are Typical and Custom.
Use the Select Components panel to select any combination of the FrontPage components to install on your system. This panel displays the amount of disk space required to install the components that you select.
If you do not have enough disk space to install FrontPage, click the Disk Space button. The Available Disk Space dialog box appears. The Space Required field indicates the amount of disk space required to install the components that you select. The Space Available field indicates the amount of disk space available on the drive.
To change drives, select another drive in the Drive field. If you still do not have enough disk space to install FrontPage, click Cancel to close the Available Disk Space dialog box. Click Cancel again to exit the setup program.
When performing a new installation, you have the following options:
When upgrading from a previous version of FrontPage, you have the following options:
The FrontPage Personal Web Server panel appears when you upgrade FrontPage from a previous version and choose to install a copy of the Personal Web Server in a second directory. Setup detects the existing Web server (usually configured on port 80). It informs you that the new server will be configured for a new port (usually port 8080) and that to use the new Web server, you need to start the server manually.
Click Next to proceed to step 11.
| NOTE |
When you connect to the new Web server using the FrontPage Explorer or your browser, you need to append the port number to the server name. For example, if your new Web server is installed to port 8080, enter the following server name in the FrontPage Explorer: http://yourservername:8080 |
In the Select Program Folder panel, you choose a program folder in which to include icons and shortcuts for FrontPage. By default, the icons are added to the Microsoft FrontPage program folder. After you choose a program folder or accept the default choice, click Next to proceed to step 11.
The Start Copying Files panel displays the choices you made during the setup procedure. Review the directories to make sure that everything will be installed where you want it to appear. If you want to change your choices, use the Back button to review your previous choices and revise as necessary. Keep clicking Next until you reach the Start Copying Files panel again.
To install the files, click Next. Insert the program disks when prompted and choose OK or press Enter to copy the files from each disk. The setup program installs the files in the directories that you chose.
After the files are copied to your computer, you are prompted to enter your Administrator Name and Password, as described in step 12.
If you installed the Personal Web Server, you must register yourself as a server administrator. You should set up an administrator name and password that uses the same name and password required to access the Web site on your remote server. FrontPage allows you to configure more than one administrator for each of your webs, so you can use different configurations for local and remote Web development.
To register yourself as the administrator of the server, follow these steps:
After setup configures the administrator name and password, the Setup Complete panel appears, telling you that you can run Microsoft FrontPage.
To complete the setup procedure and start the FrontPage Explorer,
check the Start
the FrontPage Explorer Now checkbox and click the Finish button.
Then, proceed to step 14.
To complete the setup procedure without starting the FrontPage Explorer, uncheck the Start the FrontPage Explorer Now checkbox and click the Finish button. You need to select this option when you install the Personal Web Server to a second directory because you need to start the correct server before you develop your webs with FrontPage 97.
The first time you run the FrontPage Explorer for a new installation, you are informed that FrontPage will attempt to determine your machine's host name and TCP/IP address and that the process might take several minutes. Click OK to continue.
A dialog box appears when the process is complete. It advises you of your machine's host name. Use this server name-or any of the others that are returned during the TCP/IP test-when you log in to your server. Then, FrontPage opens the Getting Started dialog box, which is discussed in Chapter 1 "Getting Started." You're off and running to develop your webs using FrontPage.
If you install FrontPage on a computer that does not have a modem
or TCP/IP stack configured, FrontPage asks if you want help to
install TCP/IP networking.
| NOTE |
You may be prompted to insert your Windows 95 setup disks to install any drivers and DLL files necessary for TCP/IP networking. Have your installation disks or CD ready to insert when you are prompted for them. |
The steps required to complete this setup in Windows 95 follow:
After your computer restarts, you can run the TCP/IP test as indicated in step 15 to check your installation before you run the FrontPage Explorer.
If you do not know what your server name is or if you need to
enter additional information in the FrontPage Server Administrator,
you can run the TCP/IP test program. It checks your system for
a TCP/IP stack and reports back the server identifications that
you can use on your system.
| NOTE |
If you don't have an Internet service provider, you should be able to use localhost as a server name if you followed the procedures recommended during setup to configure a TCP/IP stack. |
To run the TCP/IP test program, follow these steps:
After you click the Start Test button in step 3, FrontPage reports the results that it finds. For a fully operational system, they should include the following:
If these results are not reported, click the Explain Results button. You are advised on how you can correct your configuration.
