Introduction

Hello and welcome to our book!

Having been System and Software Developers for many years, we have purchased innumerable computer-related books and references only to find them packed with material that rarely goes beyond the basic subject knowledge we possessed prior to buying the book. This has been especially true of the glut of Web- and Internet-related books now available. As with our other book efforts, we were intent on not subjecting our readers to the same fate.

So what kind of book did we end up with? First and foremost, it's a book for all the Web and System Administrators (and IT Managers too!) responsible for providing intelligent and powerful methods for users to search and access documents on the sites they administer. We've included a wealth of background and information on content and property indexing, site design, security issues. Oh yeah, we've also provided a comprehensive view of just how Index Server works. We haven't forgotten about you programmers out there either. You'll notice that much of the material in this book (especially the code examples liberally sprinkled throughout) has a definite developer's flavor to it. We didn't want to simply show how to use the product as delivered, but rather how the functionality and usability of Index Server can be greatly expanded through customization, applications We didn't want to simply show how to use the product as delivered, but rather how the functionality and usability of Index Server can be greatly expanded through customization, application development, and integration with other applications.

We hope we've met our goal of providing a useful and practical guide to designing and implementing Index Server at your site. Please enjoy, and let us know what you think! We value your feedback, ideas, and suggestions.
